The City of Stirling was forced to sit up and take notice
when it received 1105 written submissions objecting to the rezoning and
subdivision of the Scarborough High site.
This is a fantastic result and demonstrates the strong
feeling in the community that this land belongs to the people and should
remaining in public hands.
Only 6 submissions supported the proposal that would enable
the subdivision and sale of 85% of the land for housing.
SHOSAG was well represented at the City of Stirling’s Town
Planning Committee meeting on 13 March, when the proposed amendment to the
District Planning Scheme was discussed.
The public gallery was full to overflowing with our
supporters, which did not go unnoticed by the Councillors, some of whom appear
to be now re-considering their position on the future of the school site.
Only one speaker was permitted from each side of the debate.
Christine Sansom represented SHOSAG brilliantly in the impossibly short time
limit of 4 minutes.
The outcome of the meeting was that the City of Stirling has
sought an extension of time from the WA Planning Commission to enable it to seek
advice from the new Labor Government on its plans for the site.
W A PLANNING COMMISSION
The WAPC has informed us that although the City of Stirling
must amend the District Planning Scheme to reflect the Metropolitan Region
Scheme’s urban zoning, it does not have to support the Education Department’s
subdivision proposal. We believe the City could and should recommend the land be
set aside for parks and recreation.
WA GOVERNMENT ACTS ON CONTROVERSIAL PLANNING ISSUES
The State Labor Government has delivered on its promises to
the community on a number of controversial planning proposals promoted by the
Liberal Government.
It is reviewing proposals to sell the Maylands Police Academy
land, the East Perth parkland, the Leighton Beach site and recently has set
aside the Court Government’s plans to redevelop the Sunset Hospital site.
With the wholehearted support of our local MP John Quigley,
we are confident that the Government will also deliver on its promise to scrap
the proposal to sell the majority of the Scarborough High School site.
